Tira

I want to tell Dario about my job. Really, I do. But I don’t want to see his disappointment. Cupcakes are super popular, and there are some real artists out there. I’m just not one of them. I mean, I can bake them to perfection, frost them pretty well, and at one time, I could say I made some awesome flavors. However, I am not a cupcake artist at heart, or in theory. So, for now at least, he doesn’t need to know.

“Do you want to meet up for lunch?” he asks as we walk out to the Tesla, and I have to shake my head.

“I’ve got plans. Sorry.”

“Oh. Did you make friends already? I mean, of course you made friends.”

“Yeah, I did.”

It’s not a complete lie. Vilma is like a friend, right? And her niece, Jessah, who runs the register, was really nice. I’m sure we’ll be friends.

“Cool. I can’t wait to meet them,” he says with a smile before kissing me softly.

Okay, yeah, that could be a problem since I’m hiding this from him. Why do things have to be so complicated?

They don’t, I determine as I walk the few blocks to the bakery. I’m going to give myself two weeks to get settled into work, and then I’ll tell him. Yes, that’s a good plan. Two weeks.

I’m confident as I walk inside the bakery and get a hug from Vilma. The original baker still has a week left of her notice, so she’s doing the early morning baking, and I’m taking over for the rest of the day. It works for her because she doesn’t have to bake as much or stay as late as she gets ready for her new job. And it works for me because even if Vilma didn’t recognize me from my TV disaster, another baker just might.

“What do you need me to start on today?”

“A dozen of each should be good for now. Sales have been pretty steady,” Vilma tells me.

“Great.”

I head into the kitchen and take my apron and tools from my tote. Yesterday, Vilma gave me time to look around after we did my paperwork. The kitchen has everything I need, but I could tell some of it is personal to the other baker. A quick stop at a store yesterday allowed me to pick up a few things of my own. After washing everything, I set it all up and get started.

I lose myself in the baking because it really is my happy place. My home in a way too, I guess, but Dario also feels like home. Baking is simply my calling. I don’t know how else to explain it. I need it, and while I left it for that short time, coming back to it just reinforces how much it gives me life.

I’m ready to take my lunch break, but I want to check on the cases because we’ve been busy. When I walk into the bakery itself, I lock eyes with a familiar face. One I knew I’d see in Portland at some point but have dreaded just the same.
